I’ve been making an effort to get really back into the swing of things. That has meant getting remaining parts ordered, as well as trying to do a bit of work whenever I can. Today was a good work day, although not real long at only a few hours. I still got a pretty good bit of work done.
In the last post, I had installed the front brake lines, and run the circuit to the master cylinder. I had mentioned I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to run it the way I had. Since then I decided I did, in fact, not want to run it that way. I ordered a set of stainless steel bulkhead fittings from Summit Racing for all three hydraulic circuits (brakes, and clutch).
The fitting for the front brakes exits the footbox in a seemingly unused (hopefully) hole in the front of the footbox immediately next to the steering column.
I installed (temporarily) the F-panels today, as well and discovered the line I had originally run from the T-fitting to the drivers side front brake was not positioned correctly. I had to bend a new one.
I installed the f-panel on the passenger side, as well, but had no clearance issues there.
While the actual suspension and brakes have been installed (although not tightened down) for a few months, someone at work mentioned that he hadn’t seen pictures of them on the site. I guess I forgot to post anything about them.
I also did some more sheet metal work today. The holes into the chassis on the F-panels were drilled, and I did some more fitting of bits for the footboxes.
The access panel got cut into the drivers footbox. This is to allow access to the master cylinders once everything is riveted up. The cover for it will be aluminum, bent to match the contour of the top of the footbox and secured with the quarter-turn fasteners that can be seen to the side of the opening in the picture above.
The rear brakes and clutch line are going to run down the inside of the engine bay in the inside corner immediately at the front right of the drivers footbox. Two 90 degree bulkhead fittings are used to route the lines from behind the dash and into the engine bay.
Stainless AN-fitting flex lines connect the master cylinders to the bulkhead fittings. Unfortunately the adapters I bought to go from AN to pipe threads were male, not female and I need to find a solution. Brake fluid can’t be used with aluminum fittings and I’m having problems finding stainless adapters. I may need to find someone with an AN-sized flaring tool and just make something.
I also ordered wheels a week and a half ago. They were a heck of a deal, $400 for two 17×9″ Bullit wheels with black enamel centers and polished lips. The rears are 17×10.5″ wheels. with nearly 3″ of lip. Tires are showing up tomorrow, so I should be able to post pictures of them soon. Once I get the suspension torqued down, I’ll be able to get the car onto wheels and have a roller! While I’m hoping to get that far tomorrow, the brake fitting issue may sideline that and I may spend tomorrow doing sheet metal work.
I also have the ABS tank cover to install at some point.
Its been a busy day, but tomorrow I’m hoping to devote the whole day to working on the car.
