Installing the Body

Although I didn’t get much done on the car this week — two short weeks in a row makes for a busy time at work — I did actually manage to get the body put on the car. My father is visiting and was able to give a hand with it.

Read on for pictures!

The first thing I needed to do was get the garage organized and cleaned up because I needed to move the work table. My dad helped and in an hour we had things pretty well cleaned up and organized.

The body itself is pretty light — under a hundred pounds. Because we’re in the midst of having tropical storm Hannah come through, wheeling the buck out of the garage to get the body off wasn’t doable. I realized a few days ago, however, that the way we put the body on the buck a year and a half ago (end ways over the buck) was a rediculously stupid way to do it, since two people could do it without lifting nearly as high by going over the side.

With Jen watching to ensure we didn’t snag the body on anything or crush the fluorescent lights above the buck, we managed to lift it carefully up and tilt it just right to clear the buck. Once off there getting it on the car was very simple.

While I’ll have to take it back off and probably put it back on a few times before the car is done, this was a good exercise because I can position the dash more accurately now and get gauges and wiring better run. I can also better see where things are fitting relative to the body and where I can squeeze more stuff in.

I also confirmed the Recaro seats do not fit — they’re wonderful seats, and very comfortable but just plain too big. I can get the high-back seats off to get the seat heaters installed and get them recovered now, as well as order pre-made seat tracks, etc, for them.

So now, the pictures!
